The Living Local Mural is a beautiful 14.5’ x 5’ curved mural exhibit that depicts a range of local environments including rural, suburban and urban scenes, reflecting typical land use throughout the Lehigh Valley. The mural features over 80 environmental talking points and is designed to facilitate learning about ecological processes and spur discussion about sustainable decision making. The mural creates a context to pose questions, cultivate dialogue, and illustrate the complexity and interdependency of environmental issues. Students can interact with the mural through discussions, a guidebook, and worksheets. A smaller traveling version of the mural is also available if an offsite visit is requested.

Manifest Destiny is an 8 by 24 foot replica. The original (oil and acrylic on wood) is at the Smithsonian in New York. The mural represents downtown Brooklyn as seen from the eastern short of Manhattan around the year 5000. Rockman sought to show how changes in the short term can eventually lead to destruction. He engaged with ecologists, paleontologists, biologists, archaeologists and architects to create the painting. Students can silently reflect on the painting and participate in a group discussion of what the mural represents, the hidden details, and what it means for human behavior now and in the future.
