About the Artist: Jackie Lima

Nurture Nature Center (NNC) is pleased to highlight artist Jackie Lima who was commissioned to create a community-based mural (Easton area) as part of NNC’s CREATE Resilience project funded through National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Environmental Literacy Grant program.

Jackie Lima received her BFA from a small special Art School called Swain School of Design, in New Bedford, MA. She then attended Brooklyn College CUNY, for the purpose of studying with Lennart Anderson), and received her MFA there. She then lived in the City for 25 years, exhibiting with the Blue Mountain Gallery, working with the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition, working in her studio in DUMBO throughout the 80’s and 90’s. Easton became her home in 2005.

Her artwork engages perspective in different ways. Out of a desire to have ALL of visible space in her paintings, floor/nadir, ceiling/zenith, and 360 degrees in all directions, she began painting the world around her on spherical surfaces.

She has experimented with other forms of representing this visual sphere, such as cutting it open and laying it flat –– seeking the least amount of distortion. These 3-Dimensional paintings have form based upon various processes of visual perception. These ways of looking and seeing are all related to the cutting-up visual field, pulling it apart, and rearranging it, in many different ways. This pseudo-scientific approach manifests the ”optical unconscious” into Poetic Visual Art.

Jackie was featured with a solo show this past year in Nurture Nature Center’s Science Hall Gallery. A virtual tour of her exhibit will be posted here next Friday!

She has been teaching since 1983 in Universities in New York and New Jersey. Now she teaches Art Appreciation (On-Line) for Fairleigh Dickinson University – after having developed On-Line courses for them in the early 90’s when the Internet changed all our lives and Universities everywhere were developing Distance Learning programs. Today this has become Vital.

She loves Canvassing and has knocked on practically every door in Easton and in many other parts of PA as well…with Working America AFL-CIO, the 2010 Census, Easton Promise Neighborhood, Easton Matters (a program of the Nurture Nature Center), and her local political party.
