Skywatchers Wanted!

If you have an interest in space, join us in celebrating the 35th year of the Hubble Space Telescope.  Each month throughout 2025, the Nurture Nature Center will be hosting the “Hubble’s Night Sky Challenge”.  Plan to join us on Saturday, January 4th from 4-5pm to begin this opportunity to learn more about our place in the universe.

Days are short and temperatures drop.  It’s winter for our part of the world but why do we experience this change? What happens in other parts of the world? And what about places where it is cold year round? Find out about seasons, discover how influential the Earth’s poles and snow and ice-covered areas are, how these areas are changing and what that means for the rest of the globe in this winter themed Science on a Sphere program.

Join us for a panel discussion with local compost experts covering worm composting, compost at community gardens, Lafayette College’s “Sustainable Food Loop,” and the City of Easton’s Urban Conservation Department’s efforts. After the panel we will have time for demonstrations and hands-on activities about how composting works, different options for composting your food waste, and community-wide options to make composting easier for everyone.

Come see a shocking show about electricity. We will learn what electricity is, how we generate it at power plants and how our bodies can generate sparks of static electricity in the winter. We will also talk about how nature generates enormous electrical fields that lead to lightning. You will see our static electric generator produce up to 250,000 volts and listen to the musical tones of a singing tesla coil!

Chocolate is everywhere this week! Whether you gift it to your loved ones or it is just a favorite treat, chocolate-lovers will enjoy this Science on a Sphere show about chocolate – where it comes from, how it is grown, and how it ends up in the store for you to buy. Chocolate sampling to follow the program.

This weekend we change our clocks, shifting how we track our days. Join us at NNC to learn about one of the most mysterious aspects of our universe… time. This sphere show will cover everything from how we measure time to the fundamental laws of physics that lead to our understanding of the passage of time. Along the way we will take a tour of deep time from the formation of the earth and beyond into the distant future.

When was the last time you looked up and saw stars in the nighttime sky?  Can you see the stars where you live?  With our 24/7 schedules and continuous city lights, dark skies are hard to come by in some places.  Join NNC to learn more about light pollution, its impact and possible solutions.  You can also find out about Earth Hour and consider participating in turning off lights from 8:30-9:30 pm on March 22nd.
